Level 2 (lesson 1) Wudoo, Facing the Qiblah

Obligatory Acts of Wudoo’

The obligatory acts of wudoo’ are:

  1. Washing the face (from the top of the forhead untill below the chin, from one ear to the other.
  2. Washing the forearms, including the elbows and hands.
  3. Wiping over the head.
  4. Washing the feet, including the ankles.

It is also important to:

  1. Make intention.
  2. Perform the acts of wudo in their proper order.
  3. Performing wudoo’ in one go without stopping too long between acts.
  • It is recommended to wash the face, hands, and feet three times. It is, however, obligatory to perform these acts only once.
  • A Muslim should wipe over his head only once.

Facing the Qiblah

Muslims face the qiblah in prayer.

  • Muslims face the direction of the Ka’bah when they pray.
  • This direction is known as the qiblah. Allah says in the Qur’aan:

Allah says,

“We will surely turn you to a qiblah with which you will be pleased. So turn your face (yourself) toward Al-Masjid Al-Haraam.” (Soorah al-Baqarah: 144)

  • Allah a commands Muslims to face the qiblah from wherever they are on earth; whether North, South, East or West.
  • People that are not sure of the direction of the Ka’bah must do their best to determine the qiblah and then pray in that direction.
